Katherine Fernandez Asis
Katherine graduated from the Philippine High School for the Arts valedictorian and outstanding artist for music in 1996.
She finished at the UP College of Music Piano Performance 2001 summa cum laude, under Professor Carmencita Arambulo. During her seven years at GMS, Mrs. A served as her lifelong mentor and inspiration in piano pedagogy and the formative education of children.
After being awarded one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines in 2001, she pursued her Masters in Piano Performance at Towson University, Maryland, and graduated with distinction in 2003, under renowned concert pianist and pedagogue Reynaldo Reyes. Prof. Reyes encouraged Katherine to consider music performance and teaching as a means of social service to marginalized communities.
After coming home from the US, Katherine took a long hiatus from performing classical piano to focus on raising a family. She is happily married to corporate lawyer Jehremiah Asis, and loves being a stay-at-home mom to five children. While raising her children, Katherine continued to train in Suzuki piano pedagogy with Mrs. Arambulo until Book 7. During the 2020 lockdown, Katherine shifted to homeschooling, which allowed her to sit down daily with her children to discover and further develop their musical gifts. She has brought all her children on musical tours to Mindanao and Palawan.
Because of Mrs. A's encouragement to see how "all interests and talents fit together", Katherine continues to explore other realms within the music world, such as singing, teaching Suzuki piano and classroom music, composing, arranging, conducting, concert organizing, fundraising, and spearheading musical programs, while occasionally performing as a multi-genre singer and pianist in various venues around the Philippines.
From 2015-2022, Katherine and her husband, Jehri, headed a CSR program focusing on literacy, music, health, livelihood, and developing mature followers of Jesus among squatters in Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, and Parañaque. In 2023, this community development program, now known as Youth Resound, has extended to serve Children in Conflict with the Law and Children at Risk at the Bahay Pag-Asa in Puerto Princesa. One focus of Youth Resound is to create musical opportunities for indigent youth around the country. The formal launch of Youth Resound was held on April 23, 2023, during the premiere collaborative recital of her twelve-year-old son, Daniel, who performed the Kabalevsky Youth Concerto with the Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra.
