Clement Acevedo
Clement Acevedo is known for his work as a pianist in different contexts: solo recital, orchestra/concerto, collaborative, and the academe. He hails from Roxas City, Capiz, and has performed in Merkin Hall in New York City, Taichung National Theater in Taiwan, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. He has performed with the University of Santo Tomas Symphony Orchestra, James Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Metro Manila Concert Orchestra, and most recently, with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, as part of the Concert Season Metamorphoses.
An enthusiastic chamber musician, Clement performed with Richmond Symphony principal flutist, Mary Boodell, and with principal bassoonist of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Charles Ullery. He has performed with other acclaimed artists, including Andrew Tyson, Gila Goldstein, Heini Kärkkäinen, Moritz Eggert, and Carsten Schmidt. In the Philippines, he has performed with award-winning soprano Camille Lopez Molina and concert pianist Raul Sunico. Iloilo City, 2019, he performed Franz Schubert’s Winterreise with Grammy Award-winning baritone Kevin Mcmillan.
Clement is the first prize winner of the 2004 National Music Competitions for Young Artists. He participated as a semi-finalist in the 2009 Heida Hermanns International Piano Competition. At the University of the Philippines, he won first prize in the Rachmaninoff Piano Competition. He won in concerto competitions organized by the Manila Chamber Orchestra Foundation, James Madison University, and the UP College of Music. He is the recipient of the 2003 Amati Award and the 2012 Steinway & Sons Award.
Clement holds degrees from the University of the Philippines (BM Performance), Temple University (MM Performance), West Chester University of Pennsylvania (MM Pedagogy), and James Madison University (DMA Performance, Pedagogy, and Literature). His piano teachers include the eminent Philadelphia piano pedagogue Harvey Wedeen, Gabriel Dobner, Igor Resnianski, Ariel Dechosa, Carl Cranmer, Augusto Espino, Jovianney Cruz, and Felicitas Bautista Roldan. At the Brandywine International Piano Institute, he studied with Anthony di Bonaventura. At the Amati Music Festival, he studied with Yuan Sheng. He participated in masterclasses by Malcolm Bilson, Dorothy Taubman, Roberto Poli, Jeffrey Siegel, Ya Fei Chuang, and Philippine National Artist for Music, Jose Maceda.
Not a stranger to administrative work, he served as the president-elect of Harrisonburg Music Teachers’ Association, a local chapter of the Music Teachers National Association in the United States. He conceptualized/directed the Jovita Fuentes and Jose Contreras Music Institute, a 5-day workshop on Lieder and Kundiman at the University of San Agustin Iloilo, where he also served as the director of the Center for Heritage and Indigenous Cultures. As the recipient of the Competitive Grants Program by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, he organized a workshop on Hiligaynon Art Songs, which resulted in 12 new songs by various composers from around the country. Currently, he is a member of the Board of the Piano Teachers’ Guild of the Philippines Foundation, Inc.
Previously, he held full-time positions at the Eastern Mennonite University (Harrisonburg, Virginia), University of San Agustin (Iloilo City). At present, he is an assistant professor at the University of the Philippines College of Music (Quezon City), where he teaches piano and music history.
